Nord Stream 2 - What's the US Government Saying?

Nord Stream 1 was a project engineered by Angela Merkel alongside the Putin government to transport natural gas more easily to Europe. This was part of what now looks like quite a credulous policy in retrospect by the Germans. The United States was rapidly opposed to this from the beginning because the US had other designs. It was trying to corner Russia and that's the difference of perception. So I don't accept the fact that anything was wrong with Nord Stream from the get-go.
