The Japanese giant salamander has been a part of local cultures and areas around Japan for a really long time. As early as 1952, the government passed a law that established this animal as a kind of national cultural asset that needed to be protected. It's also illegal to even just touch them unless you have a special license for it - usually researchers or government officials who are given this license.
