The Role of Extended Juvenile Periods in Self Domestication

In a lot of animal species, you're born like horses. You do not spend a lot of time as a quote unquote juvenile. In elephants, they also have this really extended juvenile species. Now, why is this sort of thought of as a trait of self domestication?
