The Role of Transfusion in the Prevention of Alloimmunization
Sickle cell patients form alloantibodies at a much, much greater rate than the general population. Patients with thalassemia are often chronically transfused or receive a fair number of episodic or simple transfusions over their lifetime. The primary thing that has occurred is to provide limited extended matching for patients with sickle cell disease.
