The focus of white America had remained on the Southern movement. Martin Luther King gave Northern whites a way to separate themselves from the country's racial past. In the early 1960s, the vast majority of SNCC membership was Jewish. These were kids who took in their parents' radical left-wing politics and tales of suffering.
