The Benefits of Being an Upstander
Sally Kohn: Being an upstander is a moral good to the moral right thing to do. But it's also an opportunity to make a risk reward calculation that's slightly less risky, perhaps, than trying to defend yourself. She says if we can practice being upstanders, we're more likely to have those tools of advocacy available to us when we need to self-advocate.Kohn: By speaking up, you are affirming yourself. Every time someone says something that bothers you and you ignore it, a tiny feeling of helplessness creeps in. It's a very sneaky, but powerful habit, isn't it?
