William's Rebellion Against the Normans
Eustace was out for the high crime of being a rebel. In general, actually, William seems to have played a pretty fast and loosed with what constituted rebellion. For example, the monks of Avington had their lands seized not because they fought at Hastings, but because a nearby sheriff and some guy named Thorkel had fought at Hastings. And this kind of work must have gotten really overwhelming, because William pretty soon began to delegate the responsibility of finding and acquiring lands to the English themselves.
