CHAPTER

The Serenity of the Dead

Hezekiah Wakeley's last letter to Nathaniel was written in February 1838. He wrote that he had been suffering from sleeplessness, but now his nights have become easier of late. The Sexton has settled into a new role at the church and spends most of his unoccupied time digging graves for dead people. "I am never as truly satisfied as when I am in my slumber and insensible to the world," writes Wakeley.
