The monster is like the sphinx, for example. Is traditionally a kind of a creature made up of different bits and pieces. It's very hard to catecrise it. Edipus is a kind of monster because he, in some sense, as a scapegoat, is loaded with the crimes of society and is terrible to look upon. The monster lurks round the edges of society. It stains smirched by all this. And yet it has,. like edipus at colonus, a peculiarly a potentially creative power for transformation.
