Himalayan tartary buckwheat is not a wheat. It has no relationship genetically at all with wheat or any other than grasses. There are two varieties of that plant, one associated with the foothills and the mid altitudes of the Himalayan mountains. The colder form had to survive over millennia in hostile conditions so it was naturally selected to have strong immune systems. Because of its hardiness, it ended up being one of the original products brought to the new world in the colonies.
