"I would go to Kona in the heat and humidity or places like that, and I would just suck really badly," he says. "That was, I always put that down at first, the fact I just thought I wasn't good in the heat." He learned a lot about electrolyte and fluid balance towards the end of his career. It's now precision hydration which has helped him get better results on the track.
