Neil Watts was studying condensed matter physics when he heard about the sand vial. A graduate student, friend of mine came up to him and said you know what? I've just been to a lecture about sand piles. That's how it's infinitely more interesting than what I'm looking at. He set up this sand pile idea because he realized that what happens if you keep feeding back the sand, so new sand is being dropped on the top.
