The novel works through multiple voices giving different facets of one event. The pandemic was something that happened to all of us at the same time, and we were all, notionally, under the same set of rules. But there are also very many people for whom home is not safe or cosy or happy. A lot of people are actually safer on the streets or at school, or almost anywhere than in their own houses.
