Irving's Writings About Black People
Irving's treatment of medacom, whom english colonists called king philip, has been described as ground breaking and even radical. Irving clearly thought their folklore and traditions were as worthy of documentation as those of white people. But at the same time, irving wrote about black people in a negatively stereotyped and sometimes even fetishizing way. And we should also take a moment here to say that irving writing related to people of african descent is similarly tangled.
