We're told it was not angry or ferocious but looked at Scrooge as Marley used to look with ghostly spectacles turned up on its ghostly forehead. What we're seeing here is Scrooge being given the opportunity to abort the trajectory he currently finds himself on. He can influence the future by introspecting and considering the past and learning from it. If he sees a future coming at him rather fast that he does not want to live through if he doesn't want that future to come into fruition then he needs to examine who he once was and hope that he no longer is who heonce was.
