The aristocracy's titles, they don't mean exactly what they meant before. Passing down the title of comp is more ceremonial with indirect benefits. The closer you were to the king, whether it's physical proximity at Versailles or family relation, pedaling influence was easier. Some families were just better at surviving than others through a combination of luck and good strategy.
