In order to distract our souls from whatever melancholy object is bothering us, it is also desirable to employ ourselves in external works and to vary them as much as possible. Moderate use of the discipline is of use against sorrow because this kind of voluntary external affliction calls out for interior consolation. While the soul feels such external suffering, it turns toward those which are found within itself. That reception of Holy Communion is excellent too, for this heavenly bread strengthens the heart and brings joy to the Spirit. Humbly and faithfully disclose to your spiritual director all the feelings, affections, and suggestions that arise from your sorrow.
