The Church and Its Interpretation of the Bible
The bible used by the church was written in latin and only the trained clergy were allowed to interpret for the laity. People's lives were regulated by scripture, but there was no way for most of those people to read it for themselves. This tension fuelled the protestant reformation as it spread across northern europe over course of the 15 hundreds. In an earlier episode we saw that john wickliffe had composed an english version of the bible in the late 13 hundreds,. But his bible was met with fierce opposition by the church.
