Modern Wisdom

CHAPTER

Is It a Good Thing to Face Adversity?

In the ancient world, people thought the stoics and epicureans were almost polar opposites. Epicurus said it's better not to marry or have children, or get involved in public life. But socrates was famous for apathea, which is a term that we use in stoic philosophy. People used to beat socrates up in the street. They'd shout abuse at him, because he was asking too many questions. Epictetus, the stoic teacher, loves socrates. He tells his students that they should emulate them.
