In post revolutionary china, families have often been loath to endow a daughter with property or skills because of the near certainty that these resources will be alienated from the family itself. Patrilocal residence and patrilennial inheritance create an environment in which there is a significant advantage for sons over daughters. The children that women raise, the fields they tend, and the elderly that they support belong not to their natal families, but to the families that they join as ides.
