Is There a Difference Between Tolkien and Geynman?

Michael Geynman: Tolkien famously wrote, it was books before he ever wrote the real books. He created this very rich tapestry of a whole universe that existed and then built the story from there. Where does your intuition for the other approach come from? I guess it's just reading sort of interviews with Geynman and some of his nonfiction writing where he's clearly incredibly observant about stuff.
