Lazer energy starts out at a fraction of the amount of energy that you might have inside a lazer pointer, and we amplify that up a million billion times. This lazer beam is travelling almost a mile around this facility as it bounces between mirrors and amplifiers to gain more power until you have the most energetic lazer in the world. They fired the shot, and they caused a blackout. Ironically, even though we are generating a little star in the laboratory, all the bolts blew out. I mag so the facility actually went darkt seems at promising. Black outs don't happen every time they run one of these experiments, but it shows you just how much power is being used.
Scientists are closer than ever to harnessing fusion power — the same process that powers the sun — by essentially making a small star here on Earth. Fusion could give humanity its best shot at solving the climate crisis, but the technology has yet to be perfected and would require billions more in investments. Is it worth the bet?
