The belief that it existed in New England, I think was more of a spiritual connection between family members and the dead body. There were no dead bodies coming out of the grave and attacking their family members, biting their necks, sucking their blood. It wasn't even that they were blaming someone like the mother or the daughter or mercy ground for killing family members. It was that there was some evil thing that it inhabited the body of this corpse. So, the soul had already departed. Wherever it was going to go, it had departed. In the meantime, something evil, an evil angel, is called it sometimes, that occupied this person's body, taking residence, say in the heart
