Exactly What Kind of Group Should We Belong To?

There is a theory called optimal distinctiveness theory. It says that we meet by need for belonging within the group and our need for differentiation between groups. At some point there's an equilibrium where we feel sufficiently distinct to know who we are, yet sufficiently belonging because we've got enough of a social support group or to feel comfortable. But it isn't a characteristic of a group itself it's more how a particular group meets those competing needs at any particular time.
