Time travelers aren't exactly common, so they pay you well, but living in London is expensive. So you keep working there long after it's a good idea. You spend your days taking religious crazies back to the 1500s so they can watch famous martyrs burn at the stake. Our conscious minds don't process reality like the average persons, which is part of what allows us to access the past. Like I said, we see the world a little differently, even in the present.
