Marie LaVoe's Retirement as the Voodoo Queen
In 1869, the New Orleans Times reported that Marie LaVoe had been spotted at St. John's Eve celebrations in quote, all her queenly glory. But this claim is muddied by future articles. In 1872, an unidentified reporter from the Times attended the St. John’s Eve festivities and claimed to have seen a group of black men having orgies. This trumped up description of sexual voodoo rituals is being presented as evidence that black people don't deserve full civil rights. The author sneers at the fact that in 1869 black people can now vote and run for office. He sarcastically calls them the intelligent freedman.
