History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps

CHAPTER

Bodan's Taxation Theory

Bodan says the sovereign ruler is obligated to follow natural law regardless of whether he actually does so. Bodan stands up for this principle at a meeting of the estates general held in Blah in 1576. He argues that the king had no right to alienate property belonging to the nation by selling it off to raise money. But remember, this is a political theory of obligations and rights, not a theory about getting people to do what they ought to.
