Progressive Silencing of a Brain Area

Memories and functions are encoded by minimally tens of thousands, but probably hundreds of thousands of neurons in the brain. And so what you're doing with this progressive silencing of a brain area is as long as that silencing is progressive, they will get re-encoded more robustly elsewhere without you losing them. So plasticity is the basis for why this works as well as memories are not encoded by single cells or neurons.
