Before the body ever reaches a point of catastrophic failure where it just can't do anymore, there's a protective mechanism based on the brain that doesn't want you to basically exercise yourself to death. So when your brain receives feedback from your body, red flag indicators that you're approaching, your ultimate limit, your brain will actually unconsciously reduce output to your muscles and force you to slow down whether you want to or not.
