Historians examining documents, its clear that the norman accusations of crassness and cruelty run counter to the way that harald is spoken about in virtually every other account. William was from a chivalric honor culture in which his position and even his life was threatened whenever he was perceived as weak. And when william's demands and threats were casually rebuffed, he suddenly looked vulnerable. In that circumstance, it wouldn't be long before other nobles would start thinking about taking his stuff, and possibly his head in the process.
