The Futility of the Last Months of the War
The Americans picked the Germans to the post by getting into Bastone before them. The German 5th Parachute Division ended up fighting a two-front action because once Patton was cutting his way north, they were facing northwards and southwards. That's why it's another appalling sort of example of the futility of these last months of the war. I mean, it was just these people fighting terrible tactical battles costly, but virtually no purpose whatsoever. They simply wasted all those forces that they'd regenerated from the military point of view.
