The Freedom of Choice

In Democracy in America, Tocqueville celebrates the freedom that American women show in subjecting themselves. It seems to me that he would not have been able to see what Mill's objection of women was about. More broadly, Mill's on liberty is a book about unfreedom in culture. The way our backwards neighbors can have cultural expectations of us becomes so cripplingly strong they operate more effectively than state law could.
