Is There a Form of Sovereignty?
Jeffrey Toobin: The idea that there was sort of a primordial formation of the earliest sovereign kings, rigte, and that basically, they were violent thugs who demanded things from people. He says it's just sort of thubbery that then gets ritualized and hence integrated into a system of taboos. Toobin: People create kings because they want a focal point of power, ritual symbolism. They want someone to be sacrificial for some one you anticipate is going to die,. And in anticipation of that, you give them tributes, and you surround them with ceremony and majesty.
