The Rise and Fall of the Dude
In the late 1800s, in the yeah 1880s or so, it was water, the equivalent of water cooler gossip at the time to talk about who was a dude and who wasn't. So we see a lot of poems about dudes coming up in the newspaper. In fact, there are a number of articles in the New York Times from that era from the 1880s that talk about duels inspired by doodism. It clearly was something very much on people's minds because they were so uneasy with the norms of masculinity being upturned by these new things.
