The Supreme Court doomed generations of such challenges based on an 1896 case called Plessy v Ferguson, involving a dispute over whether rail cars could be segregated. The court's logic at the time was so long as there were cars that were exclusively for black people, there was no inherent discrimination in having a white only rail car. This would remain the law of the land until three brilliant minds teamed up to begin the slow, steady and painful legal process of tearing it all apart. And it began with a gentleman named Walter White.
