When cults receive a major shock they often come back stronger than before with increased belief in fanaticism. The conventional interpretation of this phenomenon is based on cognitive dissonance because they can't possibly admit they were mistaken so they have to find reinforcing thoughts to counter the shock and therefore incentivize to become more fanatical.
