If you get a PhD in the humanities like English, your goal is to become a tenure track professor. The thing about PhDs in humanities is that tenure, tenure track positions are quite rare. They're hard to find. There's all sorts of kind of false progress that you can make along the way because while there are very few tenure track positions, which is your goal, there are lots and lots and lots of postdoc positions and adjunct professor positions.
