Nicolaus Mowbray was an atheist. He didn't think god had ever existed. But he understood christianity very deeply. And like so many modern atheists, he understood what he was rejecting. Basically all of european morality at that point depended ultimately on the christian idea That god, the creator of heaven and earth, had commanded human beings to live according to this set of laws. It's never about you standing there telling some one else they're being bad and ought to stop. Aristotle presents this entire image of morality where the word 'morality' should never appear.
