The Role of Electrolytes in Redox Reactions

An electrolyte solution is just a solution with ions or electrolytes floating around in it. So leaving water on your cast iron pan and then exposing it to oxygen means that those electrolytes dissolved in your drinking water are going to allow electrons to flow from the pan to the oxygen. The iron will be oxidized and the oxygen will be reduced. And when that happens, then your iron is a positive charge, your oxygen is a negative charge and then the two come together to make rust, iron oxide.
