Elrond Hubbard was obsessed with the idea that his mom had tried to abort him. He may have just had a really happy family life and wanted to invent this dark backstory for himself, because his real life was kind of boring. By the winter of 1950, Dionetics had grown way, way too fast for its britches. Dr. Winter, the guy who'd helped make Dionetics look legitimate, left the organization after several people developed psychosis during auditing.
