Jean: The twentieth century was a really complex story for north corea and for the korean people more broadly. Many, many coreans were taken by force or went of their own volition to japan. Jean's last name is e in corean, or e and they were required to take on a japanese name as just something that all koreans had to do. So really this attempt to blot out, wipe out crean culture, to justify the occupation of korea. During that period, it was a brutal colonial period.
