In the 19th century surgeons began leasing maleness and femaleness of infants as soon as they were born. The idea was that anybody who's left sexually in between will grow up to be miserable and depressed and rejected, so you have to fix every baby to look closer to a standard male or female type. In many cases that means female, because surgeons have a sort of high standard when it comes to what a male should look like, and a rather low standardi come to what a female should look like. And i suspect women who have been athletes are very sensitive to the idea of having your body policed over and over and over again.
