Taking the Bias Triggers, Just Taking Them Off
Over the course of three observing cycle, proposal cycles, there was an increase of roughly a factor of six of first time participants getting time on the hobble space telescope. T just shows you how, whether consciously or not, people were reacting to reputation - which is a very self reinforcing loop. And i w be fair to my fellow astronomers, i don't think any of this bias that was creeping in was conscious bias. We've always, in astronomy and in our processes, tried to be as fair as possible. But i think a lot of this is unconscious bias. Our human brains work in a biased way, and we can't turn that off.
