The Knights of the Golden Circle had thousands of members across the country. It was widely believed that the vice president John Breckenridge of Kentucky was one of the Knights. As of mid-1860, Bickley claims, the KGC numbered 48,000 members and his 14,000-man army could be mustered to 100,000 if conditions are required.
