Until the rights succeeded, all attempts at flight with heavier than air machines were dismal failures. But since they showed that the thing could be done, everybody seems to be able to do it. Malcolm gladwill has a good, a very short sort of pece in the new yorker about this. He says our expectations of what's possible and achievable are dependent on what we see around us.
