In 1688, William Prince of Orange becomes king. He is recognized as the rightful king of England, Scotland and Ireland by his first cousin Louis XIV. James had a legitimate Catholic son who would succeed him ahead of his elder Protestant half sisters. His supporters in exile become known as the Jacobites.
