For the ancient jew, passover was far more than a remembrance of an historical event. It was not just remembering what happened to people in the past but becoming part of that as well. So there's an understanding that the past becomes, in a sense, present during commemoration. This is behind how a lot of christians then start to speak about the eucharist and their understanding. And if that really was the last supper is clearly given at a passover meal, this is the new passover meal. We do have this same kind of coming together of past and present.
