In the post war periods in north america, especially after world war two, the suburbs expanded greatly. This was both to provide housing for returning veterans, but also to provide a spatial fix for what was seen as a problem of women becoming too independent. But today that doesn't reflect the ality of the vast majority of households. Even in a heterosexual nuclear family, which is also increasingly rare, or certainly not necessarily, the majority of people,. usually work in that situation. So were left with this form the suburbs that really doesn't support very well the way that most families function.
