A lot of these ideas can be traced back quite a long ways. The first research as far as I'm aware that we were using these sort of anticipatory models really got hold was to give a perception. And then the next layer in was like, well, you can't perceive without action. It's the same thing that happened in cognitive science. You're looking at pure perception and trying to build robots that can just perceive without movement. So it turns out that perception and movement are closer than you might think they are.
