I think that works because like the awkwardness comes from like he's not following social norms or he doesn't quite know what the social norm is. I mean one of the arguments is and this would go back to say Lauren Balaan’s stuff about you know another much missed figure  Lauren Balaan her stuff about the commodification of everyday life. In a postmodern culture one of the features of contemporary culture is that compared to other cultures the humans have usually lived in but perpetually conscious of many many different social norms applying in different context. Different people having different norms and the norms not really being fully agreed on by society.
